Variations
Enjoying great popularity around the world, countless variations of this drink are known . In some regions, brown sugar is used instead of the refined. Even in Brazil, variants with artificial sweeteners or with a variety of fruits can be found.
Furthermore, the rum is sometimes replaced by vodka (caipiroska trademarked by Smirnoff) , Liquor Beirão (known as redneck), rum (Caipiríssima, trademark by Bacardi ) or Steinhäger (caipinheger). "Caipirinhas" sake (saquerinha) or wine (caipivinho) are also made. In Cabo Verde, the caipirinha is also prepared with grog, a local strong rum.
In Southern Brazil, more specifically in the city of Maringá, the caipirinha is called chimboca and differs from traditional recipe to have less sugar and more liquor.
It is important to note that what is called lemon in Brazil , known as Tahiti lime (green and acid), is known as acid lime green elsewhere. Thus, either by the difficulty of finding the type of citrus you use or confusion about the name, in many places, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, the caipirinha is made with lime instead of limes - which elsewhere is known as lemon, is known in Brazil as lemon or lemon yellow, thicker and yellowish bark.
